Republican Forum at Anne Basker Auditorium

A forum hosted by the Josephine County Republican Party will be held Thursday, Oct 10, beginning at 6 pm at the Anne Basker Auditorium on 6th Street in Grants Pass. Josephine County and Grants Pass candidates will be featured.

The evening begins with County candidates for Commissioner and County Treasurer. Chris Barnett and Coleen Martin are vying for Position 2 on the Josephine Board of Commissioners while Pat Fahey and Ron Smith are competing for Position 3. John West currently holds Position 1. Eva L.I. Arce, the incumbent Treasurer will face Mark DeYoung. The Republicans haven’t divulged the format or whether members of the audience will be able to ask questions.

After the county candidates are finished, Grants Pass City Council candidates will be featured. Because there are two open seats on the council this year, there are nine candidates running for council seats and two candidates running for Mayor. Current Mayor Sara Bristol is running against Clint Scherf. The two open seats are Ward 2 where Victoria Marshall is running against Jay Meredith and Ward 3 where Erich Schloegl is running unopposed. In Ward 1 incumbent Brian DeLaGrange is running against Indra Nicholas and in Ward 4 incumbent Vanessa Ogier has two challengers, Kathleen Krohn and Mark Kelsey.

On the Republicans’ flyer they emphasize that Chris Barnett, Ron Smith and Mark DeYoung are endorsed by the party while Coleen Martin, Pat Fahey and Eva Arce are endorsed by the Democrats. In the city races they claim Sara Bristol, Brian DeLaGrange, Jay Meredith, and Vanessa Ogier are endorsed by the Democrats. Republicans are running partisan candidates for non-partisan offices and making it sound like those not on their slate are Democrats and demonizing them as such. The truth is none are Democrats and none have sought endorsement by the Democrats. The Josephine County Democratic Party did put out a slate of people they support for these offices but that is not an endorsement. This is a recommendation based on how suitable a candidate is for the office they seek based on experience, education, community service and integrity.
