We are all familiar with the Bill of Rights and most of the amendments to the Constitution. The method for protecting those governmental and interpersonal rights and remedies is lies in our right to vote and elect or pass the rules and regulations.
The Bill of Obligations speaks to the means by which we can, with our votes, shape those rights and remedies. The obligations are:
- Be informed
- Get involved
- Stay open to compromise
- Be civil
- Reject violence
- Value Norms
- Promote the common good
- Respect government service
- Support teaching civics
- Put country first
The wish list is long, but worth the effort to improve the outcome of our electoral process.
