Do you think Grants Pass businesses need taller signs to attract people driving by on Interstate 5? City Council members seem to think so and have put the possibility of amending the city’s sign ordinance to allow taller signs on the agenda of their September 14 workshop.  The issue came up after the Council approved a 100-foot sign near the south exit to Grants Pass on Interstate 5. The sign will be shared by Dutch Bros and Les Schwab. The city’s municipal code has a limit of 25 feet for signs but the Council voted to exceed that limit because signage is important to the growth of business in Grants Pass.  Council members also heard from businessmen who said tall trees and topography in the area make it difficult to see a sign shorter than 100 feet tall. Anyone disagreeing with that decision has 12 days to file an appeal but no one at the meeting spoke up against allowing taller signs. Signs were limited to 25 feet in 2005 to guard against sign clutter obstructing Grants Pass vistas. As far back as 1963 “unsightly billboards” were taken on by civic groups who thought signs hid the town’s natural beauty.
