What do you believe are the most relevant issues currently facing the county right now? And what would be your six-month plan to tackle them?
I’m 6 weeks into the six-month plan. I can tell you there are quite a few issues. We inherited a lot of baggage from previous administration that created some situations for us, and we’re just trying to get through those currently which is really, really important. And so once we get through those, I think it’s going to be a lot easier. But we’ve got to clear up. We’ve had it pretty unstable for employees. We have 434, between 430 and 440 employees. And the culture within the county has suffered. With the staffing, there’s been imbalance. There’s been people put in positions that were probably not qualified to be in those positions. And we’re kind of trying to get through that. We’re not there. So I see that still being a few months process, definitely for sure for this next six months.
My goal is to, unless that’s one of your questions, but my goal to tie into that is just becoming more transparent. We need to be transparent with the community. And so that’s why I was late today, because we had a two hour and 40 minutes, well, two hour and 10-minute meeting. I don’t know how long it was. It was long. It was a very long meeting. But to be transparent to the public requires a lot of explanation in those meetings. And that is really important to us, to make sure that the community understands why we’re making the decisions. Before, decisions were made with no explanation. Now, we are trying to make sure that the public understands that we are making this decision for these reasons. And I think that’s really where our goal is, that transparency piece, trust. We want trust back into government. If anybody can ever trust government, I think that’s kind of, might be an oxymoron a little bit. But we have to try. We’ve got to try. We’re going to do our best.
