County Commissioner meetings are profoundly different with our new commissioners in office. They follow the county charter’s intent, in addition to its laws.  After hearing concerns during requests/comments from the public, they respond to those concerns. They make it clear they are open to problem solving. There are no long speeches from the commissioners on random topics. The animosity and antagonism towards speakers are gone, replaced by an air of respect, even a bit of humor. There’s the sense of decorum we expect in government proceedings. They even hold one meeting per month in the evening for those who want to attend, but are generally at work during morning meetings.

In November we will be voting for two new commissioners. Between now and then, it’s well worth the effort to attend a commissioners’ meeting, especially if you attended meetings last year. The contrast and the new experience may help you decide the kind of leadership you believe will best serve our community. It may be the best research you can do.
